Motor Teacher, Chapelwood School / Director, Camp Chapelwood

P: (713) 354-4460

When I wear my Sensory Motor Teacher Hat, I challenge children with motor activities that provide experiences that help their bodies develop while sharpening their perception skills and maturing their neurological systems.  Some of the life skills learned in motor class are listening skills, thinking skills, self-control and social growth.

My favorite summer activity

Working at Camp Chapelwood.  As Director this requires me to create and implement programs for elementary age students to learn new skills, develop new interests and develop spiritual awareness.  The best part of this position is that we have a reunion with former students.

My favorite hobbies

Gardening, cooking and reading.

I think children are the happiest when . . .

They are allowed to be active. They learn best when they are doing!

If I could be anyone for a day, I would be . . .

My granddog Bella. She gets to eat, sleep, swim in the lake and play ball all day and have people loving her hourly.

My worst place to be stuck

In a snowstorm in Colorado.  I backed out of a driveway and could not see the dam that was made by a snowplow. I was not even able to open my car door.

My favorite childhood memory

I was an only child so my favorite childhood memories were when I went to friends’ houses and we played board games.

My favorite children’s book

The Little Engine that Could.

The best part of my job

Watching children grow from the seeds planted in preschool, elementary, high school and sometimes college to responsible young adults.

As a part of the Marketing and Communications team, my work includes writing, editing, serving as marketing partner for Sanctuary worship and the Chapelwood School, developing the Orders of Worship for the Sanctuary worship services, working on the website, collaborating with co-workers, and dozens of other smaller tasks.

Something on my bucket list:

A two-week bicycle tour through the (non-mountainous) heart of Europe.

The worst place I could get stuck:

Deep underground - in a cave. Upside down.

My favorite summer activity:

Relaxing on a sunny beach in Mexico with a stack of paperbacks (Nelson DeMille, Michael Connelly), a spiral notebook, pen, and unending supply of cold Diet Coke.

What makes me laugh:

Good parody.

Favorite food:

Chicken Bryan, from Carrabbas.

Favorite movie quote:

“Carpe diem. Seize the day, boys. Make your lives extraordinary,” from Dead Poets Society

My favorite cartoon character:

Foghorn Leghorn. (Because he’s funny to watch, not because I identify with him.)

The best part of my job:

That every day, I get to interact with all the dedicated, smart, funny, perceptive, forward-thinking, creative, sincere people at Chapelwood – clergy, staff, and laypeople – for the best of causes.

What is the best part of your job?

The best part of my job is getting to walk beside people at Chapelwood through the ups and downs of life and see how the Gospel works in the best and worst of times. It is a privilege that I do not take for granted and appreciate the chance to get a glimpse of true life-change and discipleship happen daily.

Who is your favorite cartoon character, and why?

The Peanuts characters, particularly Linus. He seems to be the theologian of the group that has to have his security blanket at all times. Somehow, that resonates with me.

If you could go anywhere in the world for two weeks, where would it be, and why?

Iona, Scotland. The most beautiful island and abbey that I have ever seen is a must for any Christian pilgrim wishing to reconnect with their ancient Christian heritage

What are your favorite hobbies?

Playing guitar, listening to records, flyfishing, outdoor activities & reading

As a child, what did you want to be when you grew up?

An archaeologist (thanks to Indiana Jones movies) or a cardiologist. My high school guidance counselor said I had to choose between working with the living or the dead.

What is your favorite movie quote?

“I’m going to pray for you and I want you to hold on to God’s unchanging hand! It helped Joshua fight the battle of Jericho…it helped Daniel get out of the lion’s den…it helped Gilligan get off the island!” from the movie “Coming to America”

What do you like to listen to when you drive?

Mostly Podcast sermons or TED talks to work and Spotify streaming music on the way home from work. I spend two hours on I-10 daily driving, and I use that time to learn, pray, and worship

What is your favorite scripture?

Ephesians 2:10 (ESV) For we are his workmanship (Greek “poems”), created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.

I monitor all credit card accounts, process all credit card receipts, post and monitor direct drafts and online payments.

My favorite summer activity:

Summer is too hot for me so I eliminated it from the question ☺. Relaxing outside on a spring or fall day in a great swing w/ a gentle breeze- iced tea - and a quilt magazine or book ☺ Ohhhh……it’s the best!

My favorite hobbies:

Sewing, quilting, movies, visiting with extended family.

As a child, I wanted to grow up to be:

A grocery store check-out girl ☺ (back before scanners were invented!)

My favorite movie quote:

“You know I love you more than my luggage,” from Steel Magnolias.

If I were famous for fifteen minutes, I would:

Get someone to print a picture of me and one of our extended family that I wouldn’t mind having on my wall or desk.

When I drive, I like to listen to:

Country music and Old Time Gospel Hymns

My favorite food:

No contest….Chocolate….Chocolate Anything (but really good coconut cream pie is a really close second)

The best part of my job:

Being able to help people get what they need in the most efficient way with all the paperwork bases covered. Just as I expect those I get help from to know what’s best in their area, others expect me to know the steps or procedures involved in solving problems in my area. We all know there are hard ways to accomplish tasks and then there are easier “friendlier” ways to accomplish the same tasks and get to the same result. I take pride in knowing that how I do my job is as important as what I do, and that it can make someone else’s job life easier and happier is a great win-win!
