Living the Questions:
An Introduction to Spiritual Direction with Henri Nouwen
Who am I, really?
Where have I been and where am I going?
Who is God for me now?
Where do I belong?
How can I be of service?
These are some of the foundational questions of underlying common human struggles. You may have found yourself asking some of these questions recently. In the Christian tradition a person who helps another to live these questions is called a spiritual director or soul friend. And one particular spiritual director who helped many people in person as well as through his books and lectures was Henri Nouwen.
Using Nouwen’s book Spiritual Direction: Wisdom for the Long Walk of Faith, this course will explore 10 universal questions for living a spiritual life. Through parables, personal narratives, and biblical reflections, Nouwen will describe how to find spiritual direction for your life today. Over the course of 10 weeks we will explore four foundational disciplines of the spiritual life: the Heart, the Word, the Church, and the Body. Each session will be facilitated by one of the spiritual directors of The Center for Christian Spirituality. If you are new to spiritual direction, would like learn more about, or would like to find a spiritual direction or a spiritual direction group, then we encourage you to join us.
This course begins on Wednesday, October 7, at 6:30 p.m. and will end on December 2. We will meet online in The Center’s Zoom Meeting Room, which will be sent to you before the first class meeting. You also will be invited to join The Center’s new online platform to continue the conversation throughout the week with your follow companions on this journey of living the questions. Before we begin, please purchase a copy of Henri Nouwen’s Spiritual Direction: Wisdom for the Long Walk of Faith.
