Is working towards what John Wesley called “justice, mercy and truth” a growing edge for you?
Do you yearn for a society based on racial equity, but you don’t know what you could do as an individual? The moment we find ourselves in requires attending to both the work in the community (crossing lines that divide us, attending to issues like homelessness, food insecurity and education) and it requires a depth of inner spiritual connection and awakening. For real transformation to happen these must be held together.
The Center for Christian Spirituality will be offering a unique opportunity for people desiring this type of integration. Using the format of a spiritual direction group, we will reflect on wisdom from African-American theologian, pastor, activist, and mystic Howard Thurman. We will listen with the “ear of the heart” to key select texts from his works, for the directives that the Spirit is guiding us to incarnate in our lives in the days and weeks ahead. In this kind of spiritual direction group, we allow Howard Thurman to be a spiritual guide for us today, one through whom the Spirit can direct us for contemplative action and justice in the world.
For a period of 1.5 hours, we will engage in the following rhythm:
We will gather four times, meeting every other week at noon – on October 12, October 26, November 9 and November 23.
