Being an acolyte is much more than just lighting candles.  It teaches young people that they are an important part of the worship of God.  Coordinated by a volunteer, this group of older children and youth are trained to bring the light of Christ into the traditional worship service and to properly extinguish them at the conclusion of the service.  But they also are trained to be of assistance when needed by the ministers and taught the basic elements of worship and religious symbolism.  Custom designed Fair Haven acolyte robes in a variety of sizes have been created by Rozilyn Renner for use in traditional worship.

We hope that by serving as an acolyte, these young persons will be filled with a sense of spiritual meaning and fulfillment. Through this experience they can make new friends, have fun, and through their commitment grow in service to our church.

The acolyte ministry originated from Old Testament times. The Scriptures tell us of the prophet Samuel assisting Eli the priest, and of Elijah being assisted by Elisha. The word “acolyte” comes from the Greek word “akolouthos,” which means a servant or attendant who waits on another.

How you can become an acolyte:  If you are between the ages of 8 and 15, please contact our Acolyte Coordinator, Christy Walther, at (832) 782-2833 for more information.
