Chapelwood United Methodist Church, founded in 1949, is a 6,500-plus-member church located in the Memorial Villages of Houston, Texas. It is a “community of communities” with 2 campuses housing five worship communities that host weekly worship services, all serving with a common mission, values, and disciple-making pathway.  Job Summary

Chapelwood United Methodist Church is seeking a Director of Accounting to supervise and manage day-to-day accounting activities and staff, and maintain systems for collecting, analyzing, verifying, and reporting information. 

Essential functions:

  • Managing and overseeing the daily operations of the accounting department including month and year-end processes, receipts, general ledger, budgeting, and forecasting.
  • Establishing and enforcing proper accounting methods, policies, and principles.
  • Preparation of periodic financial reports, financial forecasts, and annual budgets while ensuring the reported results comply with generally accepted accounting principles or financial reporting standards.
  • Work with ministries training staff in the use of the accounting programs, and creation and interpreting reports.
  • Review reconciliations.
  • Back up accounting staff as needed.
  • Communicate with and answer questions from church members and participants about donations and other payments and produce periodic contribution statements for donors.
  • Ensure that the church complies with government regulations with respect to nonprofit organizations

Work Scheule:
Monday through Friday, with flexible working hours but at least 75% must be worked in office between 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m.

Competence

Required Skills/Abilities
Candidate should be skilled at:

  • Experience making journal entries, printing general ledger reports and monthly financial statements, experience working in accounts payable, experience working with receivables and revenue collection, experience with reconciling bank accounts, experience with fixed asset activity
  • Strong Microsoft Excel Skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communications
  • Ability to meet established timelines
  • Experience using online registration and donation programs
  • Strong attention to detail, ability to multi-task and work independently

Education and Experience
An ideal candidate will have:

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting
  • 10 years experience working as an accountant in the non-profit sector and knowledge of government rules concerning non-profit organizations 

Additional Useful Skills:

  • Previous experience working with religious organizations.
  • Experience working with staff located off-site and Microsoft Teams.
  • Experience using Shelby Systems software.
  • It is not required that this staff person join the church, but Chapelwood welcomes all staff to participate in church activities.

Compensation

Chapelwood offers a competitive compensation package of salary and excellent benefits (medical, dental, vision, retirement) commensurate with education and work experience.
