Chapelwood will celebrate the baptisms of confirmands during the 9:45 a.m. Contemporary service. Confirmation is a three-year program offered to students in the 6th-8th grade. Confirmation helps students learn more about the Christian faith as well as the history and theology of the United Methodist Church. Confirmation begins in September of the students’ 6th grade year and culminates in early May of the students’ 8th grade year, when students renew their baptism vows and formally join the church.
The United Methodist Church recognizes baptism as an outward visible sign of an inward spiritual grace. Baptism is the means by which individuals enter into Christ’s holy church, participate in God’s mighty acts of salvation, and receive new birth through water and the Spirit. All of this is God’s gift, offered to us without price.
The sacrament of baptism is offered to infants, children, youth, and adults as a one-time event. Through baptism, a covenant is made between God, the individual being baptized, and the members of the congregation. Therefore, baptisms are held as part of the worship service, so that the covenant community is present.
In addition to our confirmands, the service is open to any students or adults who would desire to be baptized this day. We will offer baptism by immersion and by sprinkling.
