In 1997, Naomi Mitchum, a long-time church member and volunteer at Chapelwood United Methodist Church took a leap of faith and started Circle of Friends (COF). She saw a pressing need as she discovered that the congregation had adults with special needs but did not offer any type of programming for them. A culture of open mindedness was quickly developed to welcome persons with disabilities and a facility was made accessible. A year later, a Sunday school class was started with five students. Our Special Needs Ministry now serves youth ages 13-22 and adults post high school graduation and older on Wednesday evenings and Sunday mornings.
Our mission is to foster the appreciation of individuals with disabilities as indispensable members of the Body of Christ providing meaningful participation in all aspects of the life of the Church through engagement, relationship, and appropriate support. We nurture the growth and capability of all people with disabilities, so they experience a true sense of belonging in our community.
Support and Celebrate our mission. We could not do what we do without our donors and volunteers. You may partner with us by contributing financially or by serving in our ministry.
We look forward to meeting you! Contact with our Special Needs Ministry before attending is encouraged. Prior to your visit, we ask all parents, guardians and caregivers to complete the registration form. These documents help us gather important information about your loved one so that we can better serve them. For questions, contact our Ministry Assistant, Jackie Harrison, [email protected]
