Gessner Community Lunches are a monthly serving opportunity to meet and serve the community who visit our Gessner Road campus on a regular basis. Lunches are held on the 4th Wednesday of each month and volunteers gather to assemble sandwiches, serve lunch and visit at the tables with our neighbors. Donations of fruit and chips are requested each month and cookies are provided by Golden Butterfly Bakers, a Houston-based, non-profit bakery.
In 2024, various groups from Chapelwood and the Spring Branch community have sponsored the monthly lunches, including Discovery SS Class, United Women in Faith Martha Circle, Spring Shadows PTA, Encouragers SS Class, Royal Oaks Garden Club, Monday Morning Bible Study and more.
If your group is looking for an easy and meaningful service project, please consider signing up to sponsor one of our 2025 lunches. The sponsoring group is asked to share the sign-up genius with their group to recruit volunteers and provide the requested donations of friut and chips. Money could also be collected to help defray the cost of sandwiches, but not essential.
In 2025, lunches will be held on the following dates: January 22, February 26, March 26, April 23, May 28, June 25, July 23, August 27, September 24, October 22.
At the first Community Lunch held on February 28, 2024, visitors to the Gessner Road campus were hosted for a light lunch and conversation. There was a good crowd of around 80 people in attendance with about 20 volunteers on hand to make sandwiches, serve the lunch and sit to visit with the guests. Another 10+ volunteers contributed items to the lunch. Pastor Joseph of Generaciones and Pastor Paul of Fair Haven gave a welcome and invitation to come worship and reach out to connect with the church. Guests were invited to share their contact information to stay connected, and more than 50 persons responded. The guests were deeply moved to experience the love of Christ from table leaders from the Micah 6:8 group who heard their stories and prayed with them.
On March 23, the "Know Your Rights" event brought information from The Metropolitan Organization (TMO) and other community support groups.
Invitation cards are distributed to food pantry patrons in the days preceeding the lunch and yard signs are placed along Gessner to invite the community. By the summer and into the fall, more than 100 individuals were enjoying the lunch on a monthly basis and connections being made with Fair Haven and Generaciones worship communities.
Anyone who likes to eat lunch is invited to come Chapelwood Gessner Campus, 1330 Gessner, on the 4th Wednesday of the month. Serving 11:30-12:30.
If you are interested in serving, learning more, or just want to say hi.
