The Eye of the Storm: Spiritual Practices for Difficult Days

We find ourselves in a storm. Actually, we are all being swept back and forth in the midst of a collision of a multitude of storms. 2020 began with deep political angst and division. A global pandemic has touched nearly every corner of the earth causing deep mental anguish in addition to the effects of coronavirus itself. Coronavirus led us into the worst economic recession since 2008. In March, sports stopped their play, schools closed, and churches postponed in-person gatherings. In May, the deaths of Ahmaud Arbery and George Floyd exposed the continuing raw wounds of racism that still plague our country. And now, we are faced with deep anxiety about when we will find some daylight in all this.

The eye of the storm is a space of mostly calm weather in the center of strong hurricanes. The eye is characterized by light winds and clear skies surrounded on all sides by the chaos of the storm. Now, more than ever, we need a spiritual compass that can lead us to awareness and insight. Howard Thurman, the poet, mystic, philosopher, and theologian wrote, "We must engage in both study and practice that we might see suffering, tragedy, and love as disciplines of the spirit through which we can be ushered into the Presence of God". God has placed in us all a desire to live and to live deeply into His love.

In October and November we want to allow God to teach us the disciplines we desperately need in these days. They will allow us to live within the eye of the storm.
